Let’s Talk About Them: Mamoru Hosoda


Well here is the new category for the new year, in this category I will pick a director or actor and talk about their movies or series and my thoughts on their skills. So I wanted to talk about an anime director I have a lot of respect for. Here we now talk about Mamoru Hosoda.

Mamoru Hosoda (who also goes by the pen name Katsuyo Hashimoto) was born on September 19, 1967 in the Nakaniikawa District of Japan. Before rising to prominence Mamoru Hosoda studied Painting at the Kanazawa College of Art. He was formerly employed at Toei Animation, then he worked at MADHOUSE from 2005 to 2011, where he left to start his own animation studio, Studio Chizu. In 2010 he won the Individual Award from Animation Kobe for his movie, Summer Wars. Anime News Network states that his favourite anime are Gegege no Kitaro, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Rurouni Kenshin, Galaxy Express 999 and The Castle of Caligiostro. A fun fact is that Mamoru Hosoda was commissioned by Studio Ghibli, to work on Howl’s Moving Castle, but was taken of the project during early production. Storyboards from this film were auctioned off on April 24, 2014 for 211,000 Yen (2194.98 CAD) as stated by GhibliWorld.

Now to talk about his works which is why everyone is here. Mamoru Hosoda rose to prominence in anime through his work on two popular Shounen franchise’s movies. Digimon the movie and One Piece: Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island. He worked on two segments of the Digimon move, The Eight Years ago and Our War Games. Through his work on these popular franchises, he was asked to direct a movie adaptation to the novelΒ The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. While this was not an adaptation, but a loose sequel to the novel it was a critical success and showed he had what it took in the anime world. Afterwards he created the movie Summer Wars, based on a original story created by Mamoru Hosoda and writer Satoko Okudera. After the success of Summer Wars, he began to work and create with the help of Satoko Okudera his next movie Wolf Children, and it was the 5th highest grossing movie in Japan of 2012.


His movies are fantastic and deserve the attention they are received. All of the films look beautiful, and have a beautiful soundtrack to go with it. I love how his moies focus on women, in an interview with Anime News Networks he stated “I like the idea of using female protagonists because most lives of men are focused on the success or failure of their careers, while other big events, like marriages and raising children, play bigger parts in the lives of women, leaving more space for artistic creation.” I thought that this was very true and I was happy to see the though that goes into his wonderfully crafted and spectacular worlds. I look forward to every movie he is apart of and can’t wait to see the next one.

Why did you choose science fiction and fantasy themes in movies emphasizing human relationships?

“People easily ignore what the most important or cherished things are in their day-to-day lives. By incorporating science fiction and fantasy elements, audiences are more likely to discover what they don’t notice normally.     Interesting new project you got here. πŸ™‚ Hosoda’s one of my favorite directors as well. His works appear simple and humbled, though they certainly make the viewers go ‘deeper’ within themselves–much without the aid of visual extravagance.

    And oh, he’s wise in his music score. He knows just who does the music that fits each of his films. I especially like the Wolf Children OST. Splendid.

      His anime look so simple but they express so much and you are right his music score matches the scene great. My favourite work of his has to be The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, the story and characters make the movie seem real.

    This is great. I was going to write an article about Hosoda use of the tracking shot particularly in the beginning of Wolfs Children and how in his films theres a correlation between the shot and time.
