Seasonal Anime Attempt: Shokugeki no Soma First Impressions

[HorribleSubs] Shokugeki no Soma - 01 [720p].mkv_snapshot_04.23_[2015.04.04_08.27.38]

Lets us take a look into the world of cooking and food orgasms… Again.

The story revolves around a middle school boy named Yukihara Souma. His father and himself work in a special of the day store that his father owns. When his father decides to help out at a friends restaurant, in turn closing his restaurant for three years. He sends Souma to the most elite culinary academy in all of Japan, Engetsu Teahouse Culinary Academy, where the passing rate is only 10%.

On the last Seasonal Anime Attempt I did a first impressions on the anime known as Koufuku Graffiti. In it I complained that the show sexualized eating food, with it just seeming out of place. I am going to make the same complaint, but make a twist. This show does what Koufuku Graffiti did and up the scale, making it look like the person is having a full body orgasm from eating food. However, in this show I am more okay with it than in Koufuku Graffiti.

It looks like out main character is a bit of a sadist.

Shokugeki no Soma is trying to be over the top with comedy elements, as well as , making the art of cooking look EXTREME! While Koufuku Graffiti, was a shoujo series that revolved around these girls and the cooking the main girl does. Since Shokugeki no Soma is trying to over the top, its over the top food eating scenes look natural compared to Koufuku Graffiti.

With this being the girls delusions after eating the fried octopus and peanut butter.

Other than that the show has a certain charm to it, showing a fun and has a lively atmosphere. The characters as we see them now are nothing special, though this may change with the progression of the show. Strangely this show keeps you watching the show more and more, making it an interesting show to watch. Other than that nothing particularly stands out from the show.

This is what I meant by the over sexualized food experiences.

I would only recommend that you watch this show if you are okay with Ecchi, because as of viewing it now it looks like there are going to be those moments in the show. With that said it is an interesting show and I may watch a couple of episodes more if I have the chance.

This is probably the first time I disagree with one of you opinions. I loved the first episode, and enjoyed every aspect of it. But you have to be okay with ecchi to enjoy the anime.

I enjoyed the first episode as well. What I was trying to state that the over sexualized eating scenes worked better than in Koufuku Graffiti. Other than that the first episode kept me entertained enough to want to continue the show. I wasn’t saying it was bad, just that it might not be a show for everyone because of the ecchi.

  2. This was one of the simulcasts I was definitely checking out. Nice recap of episode one!

I enjoyed the review, you made it short and pleasant to read. Also, is. It just me or does a lot of anime have a food story? Like, a girl wanting to be a pattisiere etc….?

  4. Sunite says:

I have high hopes for this one, it being about cooking, and I’ve always wanted to get into cooking, it’s something that I will gladly enjoy. And the story seems to be getting better!

  5. This is literally food porn haha.

  6. readernreviewer says:

Have you read the manga? The show seems pretty legit so far imo

I started to read the manga and it seems okay. I have only watched the first episode of the anime and stopped watching it after that because there were shows that I enjoyed more this season than it.
