As a reward for Sekinetsu help with the site’s banner he was allowed to pick five thing for me to review. He picked five anime and this here is one of them.
The Facts are These:
Kamijou Touma is a student living in the highly advanced series, Academy City. Despite being ranked zero he has the ability to negate any ability. In the city one day he meets a girl named Index, and in her head she holds 103,000 forbidden magical tomes. Now this is where science and magic meet.
This series is different from other in the sense that it is the same. I know that sounds confusing, but hear me out. Many shows use the theme of a school to train those who have powers and are classified by the effectiveness of their powers. This show is unique in the sense of that is not the focus of the show. This is the plot point used to connect the characters together and progress the story. Where as other shows use that as the main theme for the show.
Behind the Scenes:
The series is based off the light novel series of the same name by author Kazuma Kamachi. His other works include A Certain Scientific Railgun, Heavy Object, and A Certain Scientific Accelerator. The series was directed by Hiroshi Nishikori, with is other works including Azumanga Daioh!, Gad Guard, and Trinity Seven. The series was written by Masanao Akahoshi, with his other works including Duel Masters, Tegami Bachi, and The Big O. The series was produced by studio J.C. Staff and is licensed by Funimation in North America and Universal Australia in Australia.
The first opening is “PSI-Missing” by Mami Kawada…
The second opening is “Masterpiece” by Mami Kawada…
A Brief View of the World:
The story takes place in Academy City, a place where science has expanded to be able to generate Esper abilities in people. In this city people are ranked by the strength of their Esper abilities. If this was a normal anime that is where it would end, but in the world there also exists magic. In this world these two opposing forces collide.
This series is enjoyable, though it is filled with stereotypes. If you look through the stereotypes you get an interesting show with an overall interesting world. For this show I found the world being the main selling point for the series. I wanted to know more or what existed in this world.
This show is rewatchable with a great cast of characters, interesting concept and overall great time. The only draw back may be that since there are more series and spin off series you may want to watch the complete series before making the judgement to rewatch the series.
Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei – For a series extremely similar to this series, but where the two opposing forces are combined.
The Law of Ueki – For a fun shounen series, that is not is pretty unique.
I do not own any of the above used pictures and/or video they belong to their original creators, J.C. Staff and Funimation.
